Don't be fooled by the standard religious-sounding titles. This is a soothing, all-instrumental album. And Finzer's rendition of "Amazing Grace" is the most sensitive version of that well-worn classic I've ever heard: worth twice the price of the album for that track alone!

To be clear, I am neither related to, pals with, or paid by Sherry Finzer. It’s just that she releases so many albums that are worth highlighting. The “naked” solo flute on RENEWAL showcases the quietly emotional playing that is Finzer’s signature, while documenting an artist at the peak of her creative prowess and spiritual sensitivity—an instant classic, both timeless in its beauty and responsive to the times we’ve been living through.

For several years Finzer has produced a series of mellow ambient recordings, often paired with another artist on keyboards or guitar. Synesthesia is the fourth installment of her “naked flute” series recorded in The Tank, and while it is still 100% live and improvised, this one seems to draw more directly on Finzer’s classical roots: Mozart in the opening track; elsewhere it’s Debussy. But what really stands out here is Finzer’s mastery of a variety of flutes, each in their own cultural style.
